Lady Elune, 6 Days old

Lady Elune, 6 Days old

Title: Lady Elune
Breed: Welsummer
Hatch Date: June 29, 2015

Peep: Lady Elune was one of the slowest chicks to develop (it was between her and Lady Buttercup), however she started to mature vocally sooner than any of the other chicks except her sister Éowyn, who is also a Welsummer. (Interestingly though, Éowyn was the quickest to mature all around, while Elune matured first only in her voice.) There have been many occasions recently where she’s been cheeping along in her chick voice and suddenly her voice cracks, letting out a ridiculous squawk, which surprises her and results in her poking up her head quickly and squawking excitedly a few more times.

Namesake: Lady Elune is named after Elune from Warcraft (World of Warcraft/WoW). Elune is the primary goddess worshiped by the night elves, a mythical race of tall elves with long ears, blueish purple skin, and a bunch of cool lore that I’ll spare you from here. Elune is known for being a protector of all living things and a night warrior of peace, interfering with conflicts and soothing  combatants until morning so they don’t fight. She’s also known for being beautiful and somewhat elusive as many goddesses are, never known to have materialized in the physical plane before, and instead only visits in voice.

My Lady Elune really struck me as beautiful and graceful, as well as being a bit elusive as she’s one of the shyest, and tends to hold back. Especially in instances where there’s a squabble or her sisters are scrambling around in a frenzy for some treats, she avoids the conflict. Despite this, she’s rapidly been turning into one of the most chatty chicks, so these qualities are what earned her her namesake.

Hobbies: Lady Elune is a little rascal, and prefers stealing snacks from her sisters rather than walking up to the plentiful treat bowls I fill and taking her share like a polite chicken. She’s also the first of the bunch to start a game of chicken-keepaway.

Pecking Order: Lady Elune was the smallest and slowest to mature, and this I believe influenced her ranking. She’s somewhere near the bottom, but what she lacks in rank she makes up for with her cunning thievery.

Bio: Initially Lady Elune was just as social as the other chicks, which meant she was extremely curious and pretty accepting of humans and her sisters. But rapidly she developed her shy side, possibly due to that some of the other chicks were growing at a more accelerated rate. I always felt like Elune was gentle and made a special effort to handle her, not wanting her to be overly meek. She was funny when I held her, she’d squawk her little head off for a few minutes and then settle down. After she got used to this she still remained chatty, and talked probably more than most of her other sisters when being held.

We were a little worried about her intelligence at first; when I would put down treats or fresh food, as I said she always would linger back, and we didn’t often see her coming up to the food dishes and eating with her sisters. After a few days she developed her thieving tendencies, and we stopped worrying so much. As she’s grown we’ve realized that her ‘slow’ characteristics were just a combination of being a little less mature and her pacifistic personality. Now her favorite move is to poke her head into the circle just in time to steal the tastiest morsels directly from the mouths of her sisters and then run away real fast to eat her treat in solitude!
